One of the most unusual coffees for the discerning gourmet comes from the Galapagos Islands.
Galapagos Islands, which are famous for their unique flora and fauna, are situated 1000 km off the West coast of South America in the Pacific Ocean. They have belonged to Ecuador since the late 19th century. One of Charles Darwin’s first scientific expeditions took him to this group of islands and made him famous for his discoveries. However, it was Manuel J. Cobos who grew coffee on Chatham Island, which is known as San Cristobal today, for the first time in 1879. He used Arabica plants of the Bourbon subspecies, which had been imported from French colonies.
It is hardly imaginable, these trees still produce excellent coffee today after about 120 years. About 6000 bags of coffee are produced on the Galapagos Islands these days out of which 3000 come from San Cristobal. The consumers for this much sought-after coffee live in the EU, the US and Japan.
What makes this island coffee so unique is the climate. Due to the Humboldt Current moderate oceanic climate prevails and brings tropical rainfalls to the southern slopes from January to May. The coffee trees grow on relatively young volcanic soil. A fully intact ecosystem and a unique microclimate permit growing grade A organic coffee. Galapagos coffee grows under shadowy trees such as avocado, guava and orange trees. Only natural fertiliser is used.
There are two harvests a year. That is why it happens that branches bear both cherries and blossoms at the same time. The ripe cherries are harvested manually and then taken to wet beneficios, where the coffee beans are separated from the pulp and other substances. During this process too, care is taken that possibly little burden results for the environment. After wet fermentation, drying and grading the raw beans are exported. During every phase sustainability is the underlying motive. Suitable technology is applied and local employees paid appropriately.
When brewed Galapagos coffee has a full body and well-rounded flavour. Its fresh aroma and pleasant and digestible acidity in combination with a delicate chocolaty note makes it comparable to the most expensive Caribbean plantation coffees and is not even second to the famous Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. The flavour is felt due to its long and intense presence.
