Blaser’s Ethiopia Sidamo Ras Buna made of washed Arabica is a special treat for mocha lovers.
Ethiopia is said to be the country where coffee originated and it offer top qualities in the world. Ethiopian coffee has a unique aroma; it is rich, fruity and slightly nutty, wild and bold. It distinctly varies from all other African coffees. Connoisseurs appreciate its particular flavour and its medium acidity. The medium roasting which only the most experienced roasters perform brings out the typical characteristics of this coffee with its special richness and body.
Today Ethiopia is an important coffee producer and the main exporter of Arabica coffee among all African countries. Ethiopian quality coffee is distinctive in flavour and among the best in the world. About 50% of the coffee is grown at elevations of above 5,000 feet.
Blaser coffee from Harer, one of the highest areas of cultivation at all, is divided into shortberry and longberry. Longberry Harer is smooth, wine-like, notably spicy and bold with fine acidity, a coffee which compares to none. In the Jima region wild coffee is harvested at elevations of around 4,000 feet which is marketed as Lima and Babeka.
Probably the hardest beans are the Yirga cheffies which are exported to Japan and Europe. The biggest individual shipment goes to the noble Munich roaster Dallmayr. Ethiopian coffee is not easy to describe. It should not be roasted too much because this way it loses its distinctive characteristics. Good Ethiopian coffee easily bears comparisons with top-quality coffees from other producers and the Arabica coffees fetch top prices.
The most famous varietal is called Harer. This particular plant is still bred in this country where coffee originated. The highland bean has only little body, however it boasts a fine fragrance and discreet aroma, elegant harmonious acid which at time can be felt as somewhat strong.
